Smudge (literally: smoking fire), bundled in sticks or bundles, is an all-natural ceremonial incense used by Native Americans, such as in sweat lodges. Yerba santa means "holy plant" in Spanish. In the past, yerba santa leaves were used to treat asthma, respiratory infections, and nasal congestion (rhinitis). Other Native American tribes used it to make a kind of gruel to treat wounds, insect bites, broken bones, and ulcers.

Doctors, therapists and body healers are beginning to discover the beneficial effects of this plant. Sea buckthorn bundles are used around the world to reconnect with the power of Mother Nature. It is possible that the use of smoking plants and resins originated in primitive times, when fires were lit in caves. The ceremony of purifying people, places and attributes with smoke is still performed today. In addition, the smoke (smuge) of certain plants was not only useful for driving away annoying flying insects, but also preserved food and hides. Finally, certain species of smoke were used as protection against invisible ghosts and thoughts.

To apply these protective and healing practices, leaves and resin were burned to create smoke. With large feathers, this smoke was then used to stroke a person or object. In addition, the smoke of certain plants was used in healing practices, while the smoke of other plants was used for their more general properties.

Smudge smoke was created by placing dried herbs or herbs on smoldering coals, or by burning dried herbs in a ceramic bowl or large shell. White sage is burned during ceremonies to ward off evil spirits, negative thoughts or influences. The leaves are famous for their unusual scent and are used as a natural repellent against mosquitoes (on clothing) or mosquitoes (in the room).
